JOHN LOCKE

John Locke was one of the leading thinkers of the Enlightenment. His arguments about the social contract would influence world politics for centuries.

PROTEST

A colonial American reacts angrily to news of British taxes on American business.

The American Revolution

In 1775, colonial Americans rebelled against British attempts to impose new taxes, beginning the Revolutionary War (1775–1783). The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson and signed in 1776, explained why the Thirteen Colonies had decided to break away from Great Britain. He stressed individual rights and the right to revolt against unjust government.

In 1787, after the end of the war, the Founding Fathers signed the US Constitution. It is the oldest written national constitution still in use. It defined the system of government and law and the basic rights of every American citizen.
